Studio Wae produced the paving for the Yotel Hotel which has an ambitious approach to sustainability. Together with the architects of Delva, we collaborated on the paving design. The paving had a regular pattern of rectangles and was finished off with a steel kerb (metal paving edging). The customer was more than happy with the quality of the tiles. The collaboration with contractor Kleywegen was fun and efficient and we hope to work together again in the future.

Eco-friendly paving for Dutch train platforms

In 2019, Studio Wae delivered the first circular platform to ProRail and the collaboration to provide more platforms across the Netherlands with circular paving has continued since then!

All of the old paving was processed to produce the material for the new tiles. For this, we developed a new recipe and, with help from our contractor and the producer, designed a mould.

This modest project has had a great impact on raw material extraction. Usually, the used material is crushed and fixed under the asphalt. Now, we work together with our waste shredder to break down the material in even smaller fractions and sift it to extract all impurities. 76% of the weight of the raw material is now replaced by fully circular material. This benefits our climate and saves around 2.686 tons of new raw material extraction while saving 142 tons of CO2 from being produced!

Unique product specifications:

  • Our tiles score 92% on the MCI (Material Circularity Index
  • The old tiles are 100% recycled
  • A product that looks aesthetically better than standard paving
  • The product can be scaled up

“The idea of the new reception area is that we, as AVR, have a great place to tell our story and to show what you can do with waste,” – Jasper de Jong, Commercial Director at AVR

Location: AVR reception area in Rotterdam (Rozenburg location)
Product name: Polygon Rug
Material: Carpet tile production waste from Interface, Tarkoo and Forbo

This waste-based interior of an entrance hall and conference room was designed for Waste AfvalVerwerking (AVR), by Fokkema & Partners Architecten and Studio architectuurMAKEN. AVR focuses on the sustainable processing of waste by turning waste into energy. This waste processing plant goes further to show that modern designs can be made out of waste and still be stylish.

100% waste-based interior for AVR

The AVR reception area in Rotterdam has been renovated and is fully furnishes with recycled materials. A minimal amount of waste was created during the renovation by reusing as many existing parts as possible. The Studio Wae rug is made from Interface’s production waste. The tiles form a large rug shape in the conference room of AVR. Luckily, the tiles can be easily clicked loose and place elsewhere in a different shape.

The client’s circular ambition made it possible to involve the producers at an early stage without the risk that the energy would be lost again in a tendering process. Collaboration has led to innovation and a 100% waste-based interior.

Studio Wae produced a modular and circular rug Stichtse Vecht in Maarssen. The architect of GZ OfficeXperience and the commissioner visited Studio Wae’s workstation where they chose their unique colour combination for the rug from more than eighty pallets with different colours. After that, the beautiful tiles were produced in the characteristic City shape. The tiles are completely made from production waste of Tarkett and Interface and form an amazing rug with geometric shapes and depth. The rug sits organically in the room with its unique non-rectangle shape. If the layout of the room changes, the rug can easily change along with it, as the separate tiles can be detached and clicked back together in a different design.

Studio Wae produced the modular flooring tiles in Boom shape for the Pharos building. The architect, Sheryl Leysner, used circular and other sustainable products wherever possible throughout the entire project, including some of her own designs. Studio Wae’s circular flooring perfectly matched this approach. Sheryl sent us a number of moodboards and Studio Wae presented multiple colour combinations. Eventually Sheryl opted for the Boomerang shape – the flooring is suitable for rolling office chairs. The installation of the flooring was a job done fast! The Boomerang rug tiles are simply put on the flattened surface with a non-slip layer instead of glue. Any tiles with insoluble stains can easily be replaced.

The rugs exude a warm and cosy atmosphere while having acoustic properties. Visitors of the lobby are welcomed with sustainable Dutch design, manufactured with social impact. These are precisely the ambitions of the UWV.
